Do you wonder what Design Thinking is and how you could use it in your decision-making?

Design thinking is one of those concepts, like strategic planning, which often seems shrouded in mystery. To understand topics like this we find a great podcast is perfect. We recently loved Freakonomics author, Steve Levitt’s interview with Stanford’s head of the d.school, Sarah Stein Greenberg.

Sarah explains that:

  • Design thinking helps you to approach hard problems in a different way.
  • Start with an open eyed and curious immersion in the problem. If you’re trying to understand inefficiencies in a healthcare setting for instance, you go and spend time in that setting, watching, interviewing and listening.
  • Generate hypotheses about what could be going on, and what possible solutions could address it. The insights and transformations that Design Thinking delivers are usually because this phase is radically brave in leaving preconceived answers to one side, in favour of a proliferation of possible hypotheses.
  • Decide which answer to trial based on clear criteria about how you’ll select a good possible solution, and the courage to then pursue one or two solutions, with a watch, learn, experiment mindset.

Design Thinking is a way of operating that is deeply transferable to everyday leadership challenges and is just one possible modality we find ourselves supporting our coaching clients to experiment with.
